The Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church Porfirije visited Argentina in the period from November 2 to 10, 2023. This was a historic, first ever visit by a Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, not only to Argentina, but to Latin America in general. The central event and the main reason for the visit was the consecration of the newly built Holy Trinity Church in Resistencia, the capital of the province of Chaco, which took place on November 5, 2023.
The act of consecration was also attended by the governor of this province, Jorge Kapitanich, who facilitated significantly the construction of the Temple, for which he was awarded the Order of Saint Sava of the first degree, the highest decoration of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Bishop Kirilo awarded the Order of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul to the Embassy of Serbia in Buenos Aires as a benefactor of the Temple, which was received by the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Dejan Blagojevic.
During his stay in Argentina, the Patriarch was solemnly welcomed in the monastery of St. Nicholas in Machagai, Chaco province, as well as in the monastery of St. Sava and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God in Buenos Aires.
On November 3, 2023 the Patriarch Porfirije had a courtesy meeting in Buenos Aires with the representatives of the Roman Catholic Church in Argentina, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Miroslaw Adamczyk, and the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Ignacio Garcia Cuerva, as well as and on November 9, 2023, with the Argentine National Secretary for Religion, Mr. Guillermo Rodolfo Oliveri.
Patriarch Porfirije was received in Resistencia on November 6, 2023 by the governor of Chaco, Jorge Kapitanich, who named him the honorary guest of the province.
On the second day of the visit, on November 3, 2023, the Embassy organized a reception honoring the patriarch's visit, which, in addition to the delegation from the Serbian Orthodox Church, was attended by clergymen from local Orthodox communities, representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Orthodox communities from other Latin American countries, representatives of the federal and local Argentine authorities, representatives of the descendants of Serbian immigrants, representatives of the Serbian diaspora and other friends of the church and the Embassy.
