BRINGING OF PETS DURING TRANSIT OR TOURIST VISIT TO SERBIA

 

If you are traveling to Serbia as a tourist or you are in transit, for import of household pets you will need a veterinary certificate of the origin and health of the animal, issued by the relevant authority of the country of origin. The document must be translated into Serbian.

For dogs and cats one will need a document (veterinary certificate) in which the authorized veterinarian certifies that no case of rabies has been reported in the place of the animal’s origin in the last six months. Dogs and cats older that three months will require a certificate that they have been vaccinated against rabies, and that at least 15 days have passed since the vaccination but no more than six months. 

 

Domestic rodents and furry animals require a document (veterinary certificate) in which the authorized veterinarian certifies that: 

a. the country of animal’s origin has been free of Tularemia for at least one year; 

b. that there were no cases of Rabies, TB, Pasteurellosis, Brucellosis or Myxomatosis in the radius of 50 km (31 mi) from the residence in the last six months.

 

Exotic and decorative birds, aquarium fish and other animals require a document (veterinary certificate) in which the authorized veterinarian certifies that they are clinically healthy as well as that they originate from the areas where there are no communicable diseases that could be transmitted. 

 

Animals which tourists import into Serbia or just transport them through the territory of Serbia are not subject to quarantine but they are subject to mandatory examination by the border veterinary service, regardless that they possess appropriate veterinary certification. There is a mandatory tax for the border veterinary exam.

 

TEMPORARY IMPORT FOR UP TO ONE MONTH

 

Stipulations for the temporary import of household pets or other animals are the same as for the bringing of pets or other animals during the transit or tourist stay. 

 

 IMPORT OF PETS OR OTHER ANIMALS

 

Citizens of Serbia and foreigners may import household pets and other animals into Serbia.

 

In order to bring household pets or animals into Serbia one must obtain a valid veterinary import permit and a permit for quarantine. These permits are issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management – Veterinary Directorate.

 

The request for import and quarantine can be submitted only by a person residing in Serbia or an authorized customs agent (transporter). In the case of the import for commercial purposes (for sale) the request can be submitted only by an import company.

The request should be submitted fifteen (15) days before the actual realization of import. Requests should be submitted to the following address:

When importing household pet or animals at the border crossing one must present the following documents:

 

- Import permit

- Permit for quarantine

In case of the household pets the quarantine is 21 days and the designated quarantine location is always the address/residence of the requisition applicant.
